Bier and Wurst

All classes were cancelled between April 2 and April 8 for our Spring Break/Easter Break. Some Americans (Jeremy, Dan, and Samir) and I skipped class on April 1st and started our break a day early by flying out to Munich, Germany. Around this time, Torino weather was just starting to warm up. We arrived in Munich and had to battle through snow and wind to find our Airbnb. Luckily the snow let up pretty soon and we were able to grab dinner and some German Weissbier (which is delicious, by the way). The next morning we headed out to the BMW Welt and Museum. To my surprise, both the Welt and the Museum featured not only BMW cars, but also several new and historic motorcycles. The bikes were beautiful.

After spending the morning at BMW, we headed back towards the city center and grabbed a late lunch at Hofbrauhaus. Albeit somewhat touristy, it was a pretty cool experience. I’ve never been to Oktoberfest, but this restaurant has been described as a mini-Oktoberfest that happens every day of the week. The restaurant is a large hall where employees in traditional german dress carry around pretzels and massive steins of beer.

The following morning, we boarded the metro headed towards the Dachau concentration camp from WWII. Though this location was never recorded as having committed mass-killings during the Holocaust, it was still a place of immense suffering and death for several thousands of prisoners.

After the sobering morning excursion, we headed back towards central Munich for the rest of the evening. Later that night we stopped by Der Verrückte Eismacher (The Crazy Ice-maker) known for making odd flavors of gelato. After tasting flavors such as beer and sausage, I settled for elderflower and mozzarella, which was surprisingly good. We then sought out the Eisbach. At a certain point, the river forms a standing wave, which has attracted skilled surfers and kayakers since the mid 1970’s.

The next morning I parted ways with the other Americans and headed to the airport rather early in the morning to catch a flight back to Italy and meet up with my parents (which I’ll cover in the next blog post). The rest of the photos are other random things around the city of Munich:
