Just a short train ride from Torino is Sacra di San Michele (or Saint Michael’s Abbey). Overlooking the Susa Valley, this is an 11th century abbey built on the peak of Mount Pirchiriano. There is technically a road leading all the way up, but we decided to trust Jeremy when he said it would be an “easy” hike up to the top…it wasn’t. After following the steep pathway for a while, we slowly made our way up. The view from the top was absolutely incredible. The abbey itself is integrated into the rocky peak and had partially crumbled into ruins over the years. After walking through the abbey and regaining our strength, we made our way back down the mountain (now with gravity on our side) and took the train back to Torino. Overall a very rewarding trek.
