Big Treehouses and Big Churches

A few months ago, a photo made its rounds through the interwebs of an urban treehouse in Italy. As it turns out, that building is only a 20 minute walk from where I live in Torino. If you haven’t seen the photo before, the apartment complex is called 25 Verde. It was designed to contrast the straight-edged homogeneity of a normal city structure. What resulted was a five story organic-looking urban treehouse filled with plants and intertwined with steel beams. Unfortunately I was unable to get a great angle of the building, but it is still possible to appreciate the uniqueness of this structure.

In addition to the treehouse, Torino is also home to the Basilica di Superga. Similar to Monte dei Cappuccini, the Basilica di Superga is a large church residing on a hill on the outskirts of the city. The incline of the hill is so steep that the tramway uses a rack and pinion gear setup to haul the passengers upwards. Unfortunately, the view of the mountains (which is normally spectacular) was not as clearly visible as I would have hoped, but the church is beautiful and the view of the city is still pretty cool from the top.
